Choosing an interior door style

Panel counts, slab vs. prehung, and what works in an older Michigan home.

Doors are the trim item you touch every day, so it is worth spending ten minutes on the decision instead of defaulting to whatever is on the shelf.

Match the panel count to the house

Two-panel doors read modern and calm. Four- and six-panel doors suit traditional and farmhouse interiors. Flush and shaker slabs sit comfortably in almost anything built after 1980.

Slab or prehung

Prehung units come with the jamb and hinges set and are the faster, straighter choice for new openings. Slabs make sense when the existing jamb is sound and plumb — common in older homes where replacing the frame means repairing plaster.

Solid core where it counts

Hollow core is fine for closets. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices feel noticeably better with solid core, and the sound difference in a two-story house is the part homeowners mention most.
