How to measure for replacement windows

Rough openings, egress, and when it's worth calling for a field measure.

Most window orders that go wrong go wrong at the tape measure. Ten minutes of careful measuring saves weeks of waiting on a replacement unit.

Measure width and height three times

Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening, and the height at the left, center, and right. Use the smallest number in each direction — openings are rarely square in an older home.

Don't forget egress

Bedroom windows have minimum opening requirements. If you are changing style — a double-hung to a casement, for example — the clear opening changes with it.

Stop by any of our four Central Michigan yards and a member of our staff will walk you through the options, pull real samples, and put together a material list you can build from.
