Both products solve the same problem — a durable painted lap siding that will not rot — and both do it well. The right answer usually comes down to install labor, weight, and the look you are after.
Weight and labor
Fiber cement is heavier and harder on blades, and it usually takes two people to hang long runs. Engineered wood is lighter and cuts like lumber, which shortens install time on a tall or complex elevation.
Moisture and freeze-thaw
Fiber cement is dimensionally stable and does not swell, but cut edges must be sealed and the assembly must drain. Engineered wood handles impact better and is more forgiving on an uneven wall, provided the factory finish stays intact and ends are treated.
Finish and warranty
Factory-finished options exist on both sides and are worth the premium in our climate — a controlled coating outlasts a field paint job on a cold week almost every time. Read the warranty for clearance-to-grade and flashing requirements before the first course goes on.
