Matching a garage door to your siding

Color, panel scale, and window placement.

August 13, 20254 min readDeWitt Lumber

On most homes the garage door is the largest single surface on the front elevation. Getting it to agree with the siding, trim, and entry door lifts the whole facade.

Pick a lane: blend or contrast

Matching the door to the siding makes the garage recede and the entry read as the focal point. Matching it to the trim or entry door makes it a deliberate design element. Landing halfway between the two is what looks accidental.

Scale the panels to the house

Large flat panels suit modern elevations. Carriage-house panels with narrow stiles suit farmhouse and traditional homes. A single wide door and two narrower doors read very differently at the same square footage.

Windows and hardware last

Add glass only if the interior benefits or the elevation needs the break. Decorative hardware works on carriage styles and looks out of place on a flush panel.
