An entry door is a system — slab, jamb, sill, weatherstrip, and threshold. Measuring all of it, not just the door, is what makes the install go in one afternoon.
What to write down
Take these to the counter and we can order with confidence.
- Rough opening width and height, measured at three points each
- Jamb depth, wall face to wall face including drywall and sheathing
- Hand of the door — stand outside; hinges on the right is a right-hand unit
- In-swing or out-swing
- Sidelite or transom, and whether they are part of the frame
- Sill height above the finished floor inside
Check the sill and the floor
Rot at the threshold is common and needs to be repaired before the new unit sets. Also note the interior finished floor height — a thicker floor going in later changes the threshold clearance.
