Metal panel profiles and fasteners

Exposed vs. concealed fastening and the gauges we stock.

October 8, 20255 min readDeWitt Lumber

Metal roofing and siding is measured, ordered, and installed as a system. Panel profile, gauge, and fastener type all have to agree with each other.

Exposed fastener panels

The workhorse of agricultural and shop buildings. Screws go through the panel face into purlins with a sealing washer. Fast, economical, and easy to repair — the washers are the maintenance item over the long run.

Concealed fastener and standing seam

Clips hold the panel and the fasteners never see weather or UV. It costs more and takes longer, and it is the right choice on a house roof or a highly visible elevation.

Gauge and finish

Heavier gauge resists oil-canning and hail denting. Ask about the paint system warranty separately from the substrate warranty — they are not the same term.
