Planning a barn build

Site prep, permits, and what to bring for a farm take-off.

The framing package is the easy part. Getting the site, the permit, and the delivery sequence lined up is what determines whether the build takes six weeks or six months.

Site prep first

Level, compacted, well-drained ground with truck access. Water running toward the building is the single most expensive mistake to correct after the posts are set.

Check with the township early

Setbacks, height limits, and agricultural exemptions vary from township to township in our service area. One phone call before you order steel can save a redesign.

Bring this for the take-off

The more of this we have, the tighter the estimate.

  • Overall footprint and desired clear height
  • Door sizes and locations, overhead and walk-in
  • Roof pitch and whether you want overhangs
  • Insulation and interior liner plans, if any
  • Site access notes for the delivery truck

Talk it through with us

Bring your plans, sketches, or photos to any of our four Central Michigan yards. We will walk the options with you, pull real samples, and put together a material list you can build from. Estimating is free for any project.
