Both types can end up in the same wall. What decides it is the condition of the existing frame and whether the siding is coming off.
Insert replacements
An insert slides into the existing frame, leaving interior and exterior trim intact. It is the fast, low-disruption option — and it costs you an inch or two of glass on every side, which is noticeable on small windows.
New-construction units
These have a nailing fin and go in from the outside against a bare opening. They are the right call during siding work, on any rotted or out-of-square frame, and whenever you want the full opening back.
Check the frame first
Press a screwdriver into the sill at the corners. Soft wood means water has been getting in and an insert will trap the problem instead of fixing it.
